Hi, everyone,
Our first annual art show “Meandering Through Color” at Great American Framing was a nice success, thanks to Daniela Friedmann, her helpers and the artists participating in the exhibit.  The show will run through June 30th and includes watercolors, oils, acrylics, pastels, collages, masks, mosaics and pique assiette (broken ceramics in the style of mosaics).  If you didn’t get to the reception, you can still visit Great American Framing and take a look at the artwork of our talented artists.

Listen up members:

The LAAC member art show at Allegro Framing (Homestead near Trader Joe’s) is set to begin on August 1st (through August 31st).  We are not having a meeting in July due to the potluck/social, so it is important to contact Daniela NOW (phone or email) and sign up to participate.   She needs to give a CD of artwork for the owner to preview by July 14th and she also needs to coordinate the number of artists and pieces of art with the space available at Allegro.  The theme for the exhibit is “Still Life”, and it is important that the artwork be properly framed.  Time is very short for Daniela to arrange logistics, so please check in with her ASAP.   Let her know you want to be in the show, fill her in on the details of your art, and don’t forget to email a digital picture.

As you know, we have been bumped out of the Hal Brady Room. Our potluck will now take place in the Social Hall.  Nancy asks that her helpers (and the card tables) arrive at Room 2 at 5:30 pm.  We will begin by setting everything up in this room. The adjacent Social Hall (where our event is to take place) will be in use until 6:30 p.m.  When the group using the Social Hall leaves the room at 6:30 p.m., then we can open the partitions and transfer everything into the Social Hall.  See below for more specific details about the potluck social.

Think about signing up for our venues and for our upcoming art shows…Daniela Friedmann sold two paintings (at Brian’s Restaurant); Stephanie McLean, Timon Sloane, Kathy Sartain sold at SVOS; and Nance Wheeler sold eight paintings at her workplace (Intel) and three more paintings at SVOS.  Congratulations, all!

July Social, Potluck and Art show:

*  Setup: Cut paper tablecloths, hang paintings, set up the raffle table, food & beverage tables, etc.  If you can bring one or more card tables for the evening… and/or if you have any “new unwanted gifts” for the raffle prizes, please call Nancy and let her know when you can drop the items off at her house.

*  Theme:  “International (Ethnic) Potluck Feast”…it can be from your own ethnicity, or someone else’s, and may include hot and cold appetizers, entrees, salads and/or desserts.  Nancy would like to know ahead of time what food item(s) you will be bringing.  NOTE:  There will be NO hot plate, microwave, fridge, etc., in the room.  Please be prepared to insulate your food (hot or cold) at the appropriate temperature until dinner.  Also, don’t forget to put your name on your card tables, serving platters and serving utensils, as sometimes these items get moved to other locations on the table.

*  As mentioned, we will have to wait for the other group to leave the Social Hall (at 6:30 p.m.) before we can move in, so we need to be flexible—and patient—about the timing for the start of dinner (have a late afternoon snack).   All the food should have arrived and be on the buffet table by 7:00 p.m., and dinner is expected to begin between 7:15 and 7:30 p.m.  If you have a garden and would like to bring flowers for the buffet table, it would be a really nice touch.

*  For the art show, please bring a piece of your artwork to hang on the walls for the evening.  This is for “show and tell” only--no competition.   Since many members do not exhibit or compete, this is our opportunity to become acquainted with you and your art, solely for enjoyment.

* Besides the delicious food, the art “show”, and the raffle for prizes, there will be music and entertainment for all--don’t miss it!

Spouses, significant others and friends are most welcome to come and share in our fun evening!

Committee News

Volunteer Opportunity: The library needs someone to assist Judi McCalla during the monthly membership meetings.  Part of your responsibility will involve checking books and videos (in and out) for our members.  In the event of a book sale or late fees on returns, funds should be given to the Treasurer.  In the event of expenses, a voucher must be filled out for monies advanced, and the voucher delivered to the Treasurer.  Judi will be happy to help you to learn the ropes.   Please contact Judi or any Board member if you think you can help.

Newsletter Items:There seems to be some confusion regarding items for the newsletter.  Please note:  the deadline for submissions is the 20th of each month.  It is better to transmit your news to the Editor (Esther) directly.  If you mail to LAAC at the Hillview Post Office Box address, the delay between time of pick up and delivery to me could be the difference as to whether or not your info gets into the newsletter.  While we are on the subject, if you have a computer, please consider receiving your newsletter via computer.  As you know, the cost of stamps has gone up again--the cost of printing & mailing your newsletter is about $1.00 per person each month.  The e-newsletters are colorful (as opposed to black and white) and are quicker to transmit than snail mail.  Think about it, and let me know.   I’ll have a signup sheet for you at the June meeting.

The mailing address for our club is:  Los Altos Art Club, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos, CA 94022

ARTVENTURES …with Kay Alexander

Members, please note that we won’t be having any Artventures workshops during the months of July and August.  Summer is vacation time, and Kay Alexander will be taking some much deserved time off.   Hopefully, these wonderful creative classes will re-start in September.

HEADS UP – WORKSHOP WITH KAY DUFFY

Kay Duffy announces a collage workshop Saturday, August 2nd from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Hakone Gardens.   You will mono print color & texture on translucent Asian papers, then to be torn and glued to create abstract or impressionistic paintings.  All supplies provided.  Class size limited.

Kay’s regular watercolor classes will continue during the summer, twice a month.  For more info about the workshop, her other classes or how to contact Kay, go to www.kayduffywatercolors.com.

News of the Weird:   “Art Gone Wild” (taken from a San Jose Mercury News article)

“Last year News of the Weird reported on an organic art project, “Victimless Leather” in which artists Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr attempted to grow embryonic stem cells of a species onto an artificial platform, in this case creating leather from mouse cells without the need to kill cows.  However, in the latest demonstration of the project at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art this spring, the exhibit grew so rapidly that it overwhelmed the space available, and curator Paola Antonelli said she was forced to kill the organism.  She told the Art Newspaper that it was a difficult decision.  I’ve always been pro-choice, and all of a sudden I’m here not sleeping at night about killing a coat.”

Web Site Gallery

All member artists may have a personal page on the web site to show up to 10 photos of their works. The page will also link to the artists personal web site if applicable, and can include a 2-3 sentence artist's statement if desired.

To submit artwork, you can either email digital pictures or submit a photo to be scanned. Occasionally we will schedule photo sessions before a meeting as well, where you can bring your art (framed or not) to be photographed.

We also need a signed permissions slip with the title of the artwork, medium, dimensions, and any awards it has earned. See Leslie Grimm for forms and further information.
